CHARLEVOIX, MI – You won’t find too many homes in Michigan which turn heads more than this one. One of the famous hobbit-looking Mushroom Houses in Charlevoix has hit the market for a cool $4.5 million and it’s gone a bit nuts on the Zillow Gone Wild Facebook page with thousands and thousands of shares.
And this one isn’t just any Mushroom House. Located at 304 Park Avenue, The Thatch House was built in 1918 and was the first home Earl Young built.
There are nearly 30 Mushroom Houses in Charlevoix. They are famous for their use of stone construction and the shape of their roofs. Most are private residences, but there are five you can rent. The Thatch House is one of those places people who come to the Northern Michigan city can stay at when they visit.
When Young built this home, it did not look like the other Mushroom Houses he later built around town as it didn’t have that signature mushroom-looking thatch roof. But it did use the stone construction.
“Earl Young took the stones out of Lake Michigan to build the home,” Nate Granata of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Real Estate told MLive. “People who come to Northern Michigan, especially Charlevoix, if they haven’t heard of the Mushroom Houses, they will. It’s a unique listing.”
Granata says the home’s owner is an engineer who took it upon himself to redesign the home in the full Mushroom House style.
“The new owner, as part of its renovation, put a new roof on the home six or seven years ago. The thatch itself was imported from Europe. The owner also had a master thatcher come out and install it. It was an art project for the home owner.”
While the home is being used as a rental, Granata says the owner hopes whomever buys the house will appreciate its artistic qualities.
“In the view of the owner, the home is a piece of art. He would like to sell It to someone who wants to enjoy the house, but he understands, at the same time, that it is such an asset for short-term rentals. But he does hope whomever buys it is more interested in living in it than renting it out.”
The three-story Thatch House is about 4,000 square feet. There are six bedrooms and five and a half baths. The sale comes with the 2,000-square-foot guest house behind it which has a loft, suite and bathroom. We’re told The Thatch House is turnkey and could possibly come fully furnished if the right offer was made.
“There’s not a Home Depot door in the house,” added Granata. “Everything has been custom made or imported. The furniture was very thought out. There’s also in-floor heating throughout the property so in the winter, it’s great, too.
